Before the breakout of protests in Syria, head of the political bureau tried to contact the regime's leadership in Damascus to advice it over political reform, warning that the rolling snowball of reform won't stop at the doorsteps of Syria and that the Syrian people want freedom like any other people.
The regime didn't listen, insisting that the " resistance and opposition" system is different from other ones and that the Syrian people won't rebel against it. The Syrian people had to start their revolution which had surprised not only the regime, but the whole world with its heroic, insistent and sacrificing revolution.
The challenges shown by the Syrian people doesn't ignore the nature of the regime and its security and sectarian structure, which they store in their memories many of its massacres and tragedies.
That is why the breakout of the revolution expresses unique heroism in the face of a bloodthirsty intelligence regime, almost fully dependent on the Alawite minority and a similar support from the other minorities who have their own obsessions and fears over the future.
They have also got support from limited sectors of the majority Sunnis who feel that their interests will be endangered by the overthrow of the regime.
Shortly after the revolution breakout, and in an attempt to exploit their presence in Damascus, the regime has formally asked Hamas to determine their position over what is going on. Hamas has clearly stated that their alliance with them is against the Zionist enemy, and not against the Syrian people. The movement ended up by issuing a neutral statement, which is considered as a betrayal to the Syrian purpose, in light of the situation they are facing.
Pressures continued on the movement to issue another different statement, however they refused. The Iranians intervened in an attempt to force Hamas to take a different position, to the extent of stopping support which the movement is badly in need of for running Gaza strip.
However the movement didn't change its position, remaining steadfast in the face of pressures, forcing the Iranians to repay some of the financial support after the leaks of their position, but the relations didn't return to their old levels. They are not even expected to change in case that Ismail Hania, head of Gaza government visits Iran.
It is a visit that comes in response to an old Iranian invitation, perhaps as an esteem to the Iranian support to the Strip, which unfortunately exceeds most of the Arab support. This support has actually stopped or on its way to stop and it should be compensated either from the Arabs or Turkey.
The movement found itself in a serious position, following the Syrian revolution breakout, but they found it inevitable to take the steps they had taken for a number of reasons, foremost among them the ethical and principle considerations, which require their stand beside the people who demand their freedom.
If the movement doesn't deny the support provided to it by the Syrian regime, in several sensitive situations, they cannot also forget the embracing of the Syrian people to them.
, in terms of the several forms of support. The Syrians also express their love to the Palestinians by their favoritism to Hamas, though they didn’t show passive position in regards to the Hezbollah resistance in spite of the doctrine sensitivity, as seen in their embrace to the Lebanese Shiite refugees, during July 2006 war.
The greatness of the Syrian people was clear in facing the American occupation in Iraq, where the Syrian Youth have had a significant role in affecting the résistance there. Many of them had been arrested on their return from there , as many others died in battles during confrontation with the American occupation.
Hamas couldn't have ignored that the majority of the Arab people (and the Sunni in particular, we apologize for being compelled to classify, for there are free Shiites who support the Syrian revolution, ) support the Syrian people in their heroic revolution, because the sectors that embraced it won't accept to be within the regime's side, while it sheds the blood of its people which is struggling for freedom and dignity. It is absurd to call it a battle against a resisting regime, because the résistance doesn't justify the dictatorship and the killing of the people.
Let alone the fact that most of the Syrians are not convinced with the resistance that the regime adopts because they depend on its history of assaults against the Palestinian resistance in Lebanon and its joining to Hafr al-Btin alliance depending on the fact that the support to Hezbollah has taken a sectarian trend, as it marginalizes the Sunnis in Lebanon.
Whatever the situation may be it doesn't justify the ongoing killing and the suppression of the people who demand freedom, that is why Hamas had no option but to take the action that it had taken.
What should be said is that it was not possible for Hamas to take a decisive step from the outset of the Syrian revolution, because of their links inside Syria, and due to the many people working with it inside Syria, whose positions need be arranged before taking this step. There was also fear over the Palestinian community who are considered for one reason or another associated with Hamas and not the other groups which sided with the regime.
Hamas had started for long months in arrangements for getting out of Syria, which happened in gradual steps up to the final pull out, which could be said to have actually happened, despite the fact that it was not easy because there are people who cannot leave for considerations regarding the documents they are carrying and other factors.
However this didn't prevent Hamas from taking the decision of exit from Syria, so as to deprive the regime from the trump card of exploiting their presence in their propaganda. One can imagine the fierce attacks that the leftist forces loyal to the regime had launched against the movement for refusing to support the regime.
In recent time before the final exit the pressure by the regime with support from the Iranians reached its peak, as many news leaked over the positions and statements that are demanded from their leaders by the regime. There are also reports of interviews in the media used for supporting the regime, which is refused by the movement's leadership, in a stance that is going to be recorded in its history.
Hamas's leadership has now got out of Syria, spreading in the Diaspora, however their sprit didn't exit from Syria, whose people live in a great crisis by facing the bloodthirsty regime. They pray for God to hasten the overthrow of the regime to save the Syrian blood.
The Syrian blood is dear to Hamas and all Palestinians, ot because it is a blood of Arabs and Muslims, but because Hamas is indebted to the Syrians.
Hamas is going out of Syria, while the Egyptian people are licking their wounds that had been inflicted by the regime and is rebuilding itself. The same is happening in Tunisia and Libya. The people of the nation are continuing their spring march that they had started a year ago, and when they recover their stolen decision, they will be the great power that supports Palestine, to achieve the great liberation and victory battle.
