President Hadi is rather known for his military professionalism than being a politician. Despite his involvement in politics since his appointment as Vice President in 1994, he hadn't abandoned his military profession and remained up to date with its developments, besides his follow up and research in their new issues.
He studied in the sixties in the British Saint Hurst military college, received intensive practical courses in the Soviet Union and had been normally promoted till he became deputy chief of Staff in Southern Yemen.
When the bloody January 13, 1986 confrontation broke out between the two rival wings of the Yemeni Socialist party, Hadi joined the group of the former President Ali Nasser Mohammed, which lost the military battle and went to settle in the north since then.
But Hadi's link with the military life never ended. He used to lead some military camps that were loyal to Nasser, whose affairs had been rearranged in the north. following the unity in May 1990, he temporarily parted with the military life, because of agreements made between the leaders of the two parties before unity regarding President Ali Nasser and his companions.
He returned again to the leadership of the same camps until the breakout of the 1994 summer war, when he led the southern forces loyal to Ali Nasser Mohammed which fought on the side of the forces of former President Saleh against the Yemeni Socialist Party. He was appointed on the first week of the war as Defense Minister where he led the field battles and three months after the war he was appointed as Vice President.
It could confidently be said that President Hadi can successfully restructure the army leadership after in accordance with national standards for ending the domination of Saleh's family, as well as his success in the army restructure process according to acceptable international standards.
This is his hand that he proficiently masters and will not slacken in accomplishing it, because he knows very well it is the first stipulation for Yemen stability as well it is his chance to strengthen his power and achieve his political and economic success. Without speeding up the fundamental changes in the army leadership, he will be under the mercy of Saleh and his family, as well as being weak in implementing any of the GCC initiative and its operational mechanisms, which is no longer only acquires national consensus, but it became an international resolution that is inevitable to implement.
The position of the regional and international community is very strong in supporting him in the implementation of the second stage of the military decisions, which was issued in last April 6, for transfer of army leaderships, removing two of the individuals of his predecessor to other posts of minor importance.
Despite their attempts to refuse his decisions , all used to know that their carrying out to these decisions was only a matter of time. This is attributed to two reasons; the first is that President Hadi had only one option of the implementation of the resolutions, and the second is that Saleh and his family don't want to enter into confrontations with the international community, however they wanted to send a message to President Hadi through the disruption of his resolutions, so that he had to think twice before undertaking any new changes.
However it is a message that led to negative results, because Hadi's popularity increased in an unprecedented manner, in addition to the strong support that he found from the international community. This made him know that the speed up for achieving the required changes became a national necessity for the provision of healthy atmosphere for holding the national dialogue conference .
It is also important for meeting the commitments for the speedy fulfillment of restoring the security and stability so as to remove all tensions for paving the way for holding the Yemen friends' conference, which as a political conference it determines the trends of support to Yemen in the transitional period and after it and paves the way for holding the donors' conference after several months.
The donors, foremost of them the Gulf countries and the international sponsors know that the economic, financial and investment support will not arrive into Yemen, without a reasonable security and stability atmosphere.
Hadi knows that he had to go ahead with his program for the achievement of preserving the unification of the army decision, especially in light of the positive response that it found from the army leaders who supported the revolution last year. They announced their support although it affected some of them as it affected the other side, and they implemented it without any disruptions, causing embarrassments to Saleh's relatives who rebelled and refused carrying out the resolutions.
It is notable that the army units which started gaining grounds last week in the war against al-Qaeda in Abyan, are from the units which are not loyal to the family of the former President, who refused to move the units under their control to participate in these confrontations, though they include the terror combat units which had received high training on the hands of American experts for several years.
These forces are stationed in Sana'a under the pretext of protecting the constitutional legitimacy, but in fact it is protecting the military and security leaders of Saleh's family. This aroused the surprise of the international community and strengthened their confidence that Saleh was not serious, at least during the last five years of his reign in fighting al-Qaeda, if he had not allowed its extension for additional American interest in addition to more technical support as well as for the military and security armament.
However President Hadi proved seriousness in fighting terrorism though only three years had passed since his election and despite the split in the army and the non obedience of several of the units to his administration. That could be the reason behind the surprise visit last week of the Director of the American FBI, Robert Muller to Sana'a. He is the top American official to visit Yemen since the presidential elections, so as to provide open support to Hadi in his war against al-Qaeda and submit to him President Obama's invitation to visit Washington during this year.
This gives an indications that Washington decided to end the remaining dominance of Saleh's relatives in the army and security forces, after coming to a final decision to end al-Qaeda's presence in Yemen, after its long frivolity with it during the previous years.
